Parent-Teacher Interviews

It was a real pleasure meeting with parents - and some grandparents - this past week to discuss our initial observations and progress of your children. Education in our Catholic school is built upon the partnership between home, school and church and open communication is so important! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone, remind text or a written note.

Many parents have asked how they can support their child's learning at home. Our universal answer is keep reading with your child on a daily basis! Together, read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books based on personal preferences and interests. Here are a few tips:

  • Be word detectives and find letters in their name or sight words (a, and, the, this, he, she) in the text.
  • Count the words on a page.
  • Count the letters in a single word.
  • Do a picture walk. Go through the book looking at the pictures and talk about what might be happening in the story.
  • Make predictions about what might happen next.
  • Make connections to the story. What does this story remind you of - another story, a personal experience.
  • Encourage your child to ask juicy questions  (who, what, where, when, why and how) about the story or information.
We also encourage you to write with your child. JK students should practice writing their name using upper- and lower-case letters. SK students should work on writing their first and last names using upper- and lower-case letters.

Rosary Apostolate

On Wednesday, November 22nd, the Rosary Apostolate made its first monthly visit to our classroom. Students learned about the first Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation. They also prayed the Hail Mary. Students received a gift of rosary beads to share with their families. The Rosary Apostolate is a non-profit organization of volunteers in the community whose main objective is to lead people to Jesus through Mary by teaching them how to pray the Holy Rosary.

Calling Parent Volunteers!

If you have a police check on file in the office and are able to spend some time in our classroom, we would love to have you!  We are looking for parent volunteers to support student learning by playing board games, assisting with reading and writing activities and helping with crafts. Your assistance during a morning between 9:45 and 11:15 would be ideal. Please contact us if you are interested!

We're Back On-Line!

Wow! After a few flu viruses, Halloween and report cards, we are finally back on-line! It has been a busy few weeks and we appreciate your patience waiting for the latest installment from Room 103.

This week, we will keep it short and sweet!

Scholastic Book Fair

Our library is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair. This is an excellent way to support St. Andrew's School Library and encourage your child's love of reading. We are looking forward to all the new and exciting books that will be available.

We welcome all parents, grandparents and guardians from the St. Andrew community during our regular daily scheduled hours.

When: Monday, November 20th - Thursday, November 23rd
Time: Monday- Wednesday - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Thursday is open until 8:00 pm for Parent/Teacher Interviews.

Your children will be bringing home a wish list of items they really want on Monday or Tuesday.  Payments may be made on Wednesday and Thursday by cash, credit card, debit or a cheque payable to "St. Andrew Elementary".

Sales from this fund-raiser will be used for new books and technology in our new "Learning Commons".

Parent/Teacher Interviews

We are looking forward to discussing your child's progress and have made every effort to accommodate your interview schedule requests. A confirmation of your scheduled time will be sent home with report cards on Tuesday. Please note that interviews are ten minutes in length and we appreciate your respect for this tight schedule.  If you wish to follow-up with a more in-depth interview, we are happy to schedule a meeting at an alternate, mutually-convenient time.

PAT Time

We are so proud of our students' PAT presentations!

This week we will focus on the letter "N". Please bring in items that begin with the letter "N". If your child is scheduled to present on Friday, they will present this week on Thursday.  Please take time to ensure your child is prepared for their scheduled day. Let them be creative with items they bring in.  We welcome pictures printed off the internet, common household items, toys or any family treasures.
